5/10/14

We went exploring in & around Billings, MT yesterday.  To be quite honest, after our ride to & from Yellowstone on Thursday, the rest is pretty anticlimactic.  But we always try to give every community we visit the benefit of the doubt.  We visit the Visitor's Centers, Chamber of Commerce offices, etc. trying to find out what the locals are most proud of, then go check it out.  The guy at the Visitor's Center was quite friendly and interested in helping us.  He gave us a lot of brochures, a lot of which Barb looked through...she has gotten quite adept at finding fun places to visit.  So off we went following a guide to see all the cool stuff to see in Billings, MT.  Since it was trying to rain (something different), we decided to get the outdoor visits done first so if it decided to rain hard, we could at least be indoors (good decision).  First stop was the completely restored Historic Train Depot, originally built in 1882 and last used as a train station in 1979.  It is on their tour as a place to stop & tour...it was locked tight.  Bummer!  So we moved on.   Pompey's Pillar is about 24 miles NE of town so we headed there.  It is a great big rock next to the Yellowstone River, where William Clark of Lewis & Clark fame left his signature etched in the rock in 1805 on his way to meet Meriwether Lewis at the junction of the Yellowstone & Missouri Rivers on their trek back to St Louis.  Here is the link to the info on it:  http://www.nps.gov/nr/travel/lewisandclark/pom.htm  It was a fun stop and the displays were well done.  The volunteers were glad we stopped by...we are sure they get quite lonely, especially during the week.  There were plenty of empty parking spots in the lot.  Barb hiked to the top and took a few pictures...and I went & watched the Yellowstone flow by.  It is supposedly the only place where it is confirmed that a member of The Corps of Discovery (aka Lewis & Clark Exp)  had actually been there.

The weather went down hill from there...we went grocery shopping and went back to the camper & made dinner & watched some TeeVee.  Not much else to see in this town...we are moving west tomorrow and the scenery will improve greatly. Today, we have not done too much, get ready to move to Anaconda, MT tomorrow.
