We finally got a really nice day yesterday, partly cloudy & it rose to 58 in the afternoon. We took a drive from Billings west to US 212 south, through several small towns and on into Wyoming. Hwy 212, which becomes Beartooth Scenic Hwy is still closed at Beartooth Pass, so we went south to Wyoming 296, which is called Chief Joseph Scenic Byway...what a beautiful ride. It joins up with 212 west of the pass and from there 212 is the NW entrance to Yellowstone National Park. There was a lot of wildlife out & about, very few other visitors, it had snowed the day before & it was a very pretty day...beautiful combination.
We drove through Yellowstone after stopping for lunch in Cooke City, MT. Cooke City is a remote little town on 212, only a few feet from Wyoming. They were busy digging out from being closed for the winter and getting ready for Memorial Day, the official start of summer. Then we drove to Mammoth Hot Springs & out through the north exit and through Gardner and back to Billings. We even walked down to the Yellowstone River, which flows about 100 yards from our campsite upon our return to Billings. Pretty spot.
