5/1//14 Oacoma, SD to Bismarck, ND
We arrived in Bismarck, ND last night. Yesterday was a rough day. We had issues with our awning, twice, the wind was blowing 40 mph all day, either head on or on the cross. It made for a long day. Northern South Dakota is pretty bleak. I commented to Barb how it makes us appreciate how beautiful Florida is. We drove for miles without seeing a tree or water...or wildlife either. We did see a pheasant now & then and it made us think of Barb's dad. He loved pheasant hunting. We did pass through Pierre, SD and the capital. There is a lot of dead prairie waiting for Spring. The folks we talk to are sick of winter & wind.
The skies cleared as we went and the sunset as we were driving west into Bismarck was really pretty.
Today we went for a ride around Bismarck. New houses are everywhere. The manager at the campground told us there has been 3000 houses built here in the last 4 years. I remember this town being rather small for a state capitol. It has changed a lot. There is no depression here. We went to lunch at a grill on the Missouri, and relaxed a bit. I have folks working on helping us get our awning issues resolved. This is not camping country like Florida & the rest of the south...the closest Camping World is in Spokane, WA, on the other side of 1/2 on N Dakota, all of Montana & Idaho, 950 miles west. It is a big sky west out here.
Tomorrow, we are moving west again, but only about 2 hours. Dickinson is the destination, where we will do some driving north in the car. I lived in Tioga for 2 winters and I want Barb to experience a little of what that was like. Then on to Montana, Yellowstone, Glacier & the northern Rockies.
