We woke up to a steady rain yesterday...ah, something different. We took our time getting going...windy & raining. When we did get going, we went to the Visitor's Center in Billings for info on the roads and places to visit. We confirmed that Bear Tooth Highway wasn't going to open until May 28th, but there are alternate routes into Yellowstone from here. We also picked up brochures on other places in western Montana & Idaho. After looking at the current radar, we decided to drive to the Little Big Horn Battlefield 60 miles SE of here. What an interesting place. We watched a 28 minute movie describing how the Battle went and how Lt Col George A Custer and his company were wiped out after attacking the 4 tribes of Indians camping in a valley a short distance away. We then took a tour through the park via our car along a 5 mile road through the battlefield. Although it was windy, cold and raining lightly, we toured the battlefield and marveled at how smart the Indians were. It was a very interesting and informative place to visit. One of the most interesting pieces of info was this: the news of Custer's demise took almost 2 weeks to get back to Washington, DC. This happened to fall on July 4, 1876, which was the centennial celebration of the US. Whoops, really bad timing. I left there much more sympathetic to the Indians. The Indians certainly won this battle, but in the end, lost the war. The government of the US really screwed the Indians when they stole their country.
