8/10/2014

This morning we are in Prince George, BC.  We are getting closer to Washington and the end of our adventure.  We only have 3 more days of driving, with today's drive the longest (272 miles).  The last 3 days have been pretty uninteresting scenery wise, and everyone is just looking forward to being home in the US.

Stewart-Hyder was very pretty.  We drove to the top of the mountain, with Salmon Glacier as the main event, in Hyder, AK on Thursday.  When we got to the top, the road kept going, so we did too.  Beyond, we found an old abandoned mine that you can see through, all the way through a mountain...a great illustration of the 'light at the end of the tunnel'.  There was also two more glaciers and a lot of very rugged scenery.  It was an interesting drive...unmaintained roads, an all day rain, and Barb & I spending the day together doing what we like to do...exploring new places.

We drove to Fort Telkwa, BC on Friday, a 214 mile drive, with not too much to see or do along the way. Our minds were on something else all together.  We learned at 6 am that my sister, Peggy, had died during the night after her 5 year battle with all her issues finally ended.  She was certainly a fighter, but it just got too complicated.  She was an ardent reader of this blog and also commented often how much she enjoyed riding along on our adventures.  We will miss her a lot...RIP Peggy.  You lived an amazing life that ended too soon.

From Fort Telkwa, we drove to Prince George yesterday (225 miles), pretty much straight through.  We have a lot of arrangements to make and we need phone & internet service.  Luckily, we found both here in Prince George.  So yesterday afternoon, we spent the day scheduling air plane rides, a place to leave our camper, rental cars, hotels, etc.  We are flying out Wed night and will fly all night to get to Pittsburgh Thursday morning, drive the last 50 miles, attend the services & spend time with family, and fly back on Sunday.  We will probably not post on this blog until we return, nor add the few pictures for today...too much to do.

Please remember Peggy's family in this very tough time and think about the 8 grand-kids who have lost their grandma and the rest of us who have lost their wife, mother, mother-in-law & sister.  She also leaves behind a host of friends...it will be pretty amazing all the love on display over the next week.  And as we travel, keep us in your thoughts too...lots of issues to deal with.  She will be greatly missed
