6/28/14

Ft Nelson to Laird Hot Springs, BC, 191 miles today.  Beautiful ride again.  Barb is really into looking for ‘critters’ along the way.  We see a moose, a couple of bears & a bison along the road.  The lookouts are spectacular, with the prettiest being Muncho Lake, a 7 mile x 1 mile lake at 2700’ elevation with the mountains right to the water line & the road right next to the water too.  Beautiful spot!!  The Laird River is lined with Poplar trees and is quite scenic.  The bridge into town is the only suspension bridge on the Alaskan Highway, is 1143’ long and has the nickname of “Galloping Gertie’ for its penchant for moving while you drive on it.  We are going to ‘dry camp’ at Laird Provincial Park, which means no electric, or water.  Having a great inverter will come in very handy tonight.  We go for a walk to the Hot Spring, take a swim & walk back to the camper.  110 degree water with sulfur content is an interesting phenomena.  I fired up the grill, made a couple of burgers and we moved out of the mosquitoes for dinner.  I fixed the crack in the shower with on board supplies…easier than I expected.  That doesn’t happen often enough.  We make it to morning with the on board electric even after watching some videos, because there is no teevee anywhere because of the trees.

Wouldn't be summer without road construction

Can't imagine this, riding the Alaska Hwy on a bike, alone
