7/4/14

Happy USA Independence Day to all.  Canada celebrated on July 1.  Lots of celebrating this week.

Our leaders had everyone over for pancakes, sausage, OJ & coffee this morning,,,hit the spot.  The tables were all decorated with red, white & blue.  So even way up in Yukon Territory, we got to enjoy the 4th.

We then went downtown and spent about 2 hours on a guided walking tour of Dawson City.  Our guide told us all about life at the turn of the century and how crazy this place was when gold was discovered...maybe even crazier than when Disney opened in Orlando in 1971?  Nah, nothing was that crazy...lol.  But the tour was fun, got us inside some very old buildings:  the Newspaper bldg, a bank, the post office, etc.  Fun tour.

We also visited the DFD Fire Museum...if those old trucks could talk. Then on the way back to the camper, we drove up Dome Road, a winding route to the top of the mountain overlooking the city & the Yukon River.  Beautiful view from up there.  Talked to a guy whose brother lives 30 miles from us, retired from the Kennedy Space Center...our world can be a small place.  He was amazed that we had driven all the way to Dawson City from Florida.  We came back and took advantage of a few free hours to catch up on emails, this blog and take a nap...nice relaxing afternoon.  Then it was back downtown for a rollicking musical show at a restored Gambling hall from 1898...dancing & singing.  Fun times from the front row.  After the show, everyone drove back up Dome Road for red, white & blue decorated cupcakes while overlooking the city. We then went back down and attended a second show at Diamond Tooth Gertie's  with 2 other couples.

When we got out of the show at 1245 AM, it was still light out, Land of the Midnight Sun.  When we got back to the camper, the two missing traveling couples have re-joined us after their issue have been resolved. Good to have them back...48 folks moving on to Chicken, AK tomorrow...ferry boat ride across the Yukon a first item of business.  Seeing 24 Camping rigs do that should be a hoot.  We will be in Alaska from 7/6-8/2...stay tuned.
